Three killed in protests against disputed Kenya vote

Protests erupted in Odinga's strongholds in western Kisumu county and poor areas of Nairobi nearly immediately after the election results were declared Friday, with gunshots ringing out and fires in the streets.

On Friday, Kenyatta was declared the victor of Tuesday's election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), winning his second term with 54.3 per cent of the vote.

Kenyatta, the 55-year-old son of Kenya's first president after independence from Britain, appealed for calm and unity after the bitter campaign.

In a dramatic example of Kenya's shifting political alliances, the politician who had backed Odinga in 2007, William Ruto, joined forces with Kenyatta for the 2013 vote and became deputy president.

Hundreds of riot police were in the streets of the capital, Nairobi, over fears of further protests by opposition supporters, who called the vote a "charade" and said challenging the outcome in court wasn't an option. "Kenyans want us to succeed", he added.

After an acrimonious campaign, Kenyatta used his re-election speech to reach out to Odinga and his supporters on Friday night, saying he wanted to work with them "in the service of Kenya".

Results declared by IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati on Friday shows that President Kenyatta got 54.3 per cent votes while Mr Odinga had 44.7 per cent.

People in downtown Nairobi, who have nearly stopped work for a week fearing violence and instability, said they wanted to move on now that the elections are over.

In statement issued shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced Kenyatta as victor of the 8 August general election, Museveni said he is confident that his counterpart Kenyatta will continue with the efforts of promoting unity and development of Kenyans.

Election monitors, including former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, also said they saw no signs of a rigged vote and that there is enough documentation to settle any disputes over the results.

"President Kenyatta and I share a common vision of peace, stability and economic growth for our two countries and the region as a whole", he said.

Odinga alleged that hackers infiltrated the election commission's computer system in favor of his opponent.

They boycotted the presentation after signalling that they would not accept the results. "No Kenyan should die because of an election", he said.

In protests by the opposition in Kenya which has continued into Saturday, three people, including a child, have been shot dead.
