Russian Official Says Iranian Parliament Bill 'Logical' Response to US

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani delivers a speech next to Judiciary Chief Sadeq Larijani during his swearing-in ceremony before parliament in Tehran

Parliament overwhelmingly approved the outlines of the bill to "counter America's terrorist and adventurist actions", state broadcaster IRIB reported.

In response to the launch, President Trump signed a bill outlining new sanctions against several Iranian groups, freezing funds and outlawing US citizens from doing businesses with the targets.

On Sunday, Iran's parliament supported the bill on additional $520 million for the ballistic missiles program and for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The move follows a spike in tensions between Tehran and Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January with a vow to get tough on the Islamic republic.

Of the members present, 240 parliamentarians out of 244 voted in favour of passing the bill.

Tehran says the measures violate a 2015 deal with world powers that eased sanctions in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.

Iran Allocates $520Mln for Missile Program in Response to New US Sanctions - AFP

According to the bill, Iran's combined government and military apparatus is tasked with devising a comprehensive strategic plan to counter the "US threats" within a period of six months following ratification of the bill.

The budget bill allocates $260m for the continuing development of the missile programme and $260 million for the Quds Force, Irna news agency reported. "Iran boasts potential and actual options to confront hostile USA actions".

Iran denies developing ballistic missiles created to carry nuclear weapons in violation of the agreement and has accused the United States of breaking its word by imposing fresh sanctions.

The bill includes Iran's countermeasure plans for any USA acts of exploitation and terrorism in the region, as well as the Western country's hostile moves that undermine the successful implementation of Iran's nuclear deal, dubbed JCPOC, which went into effect in January 2016. A string of close encounters between U.S. ships and Iranian vessels in the Gulf in recent months has added to the tensions between the two countries.
