Kevin Anderson upsets Thiem at ATP event

Nishikori beats del Potro to reach Citi Open quarterfinals

Yuki Bhambri has extended his good run at the ATP Citi Open by entering the singles quarter-finals with a come-from-behind win over Argentina's Guido Pella in Washington DC, USA.

In the third set, Anderson, who had stunned top-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (7) in the third round, broke Bhambri again to take a 3-0 lead early on.

Anderson's power game is ideally suited to the super-slick centre court surface at Rock Creek Park that has officially been measured as faster than Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

Anderson said he can see the difference in Thiem since winning twice over him in 2014 and 2015, helped by wins over top stars Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

As play extended into Friday morning, Alexander Zverev beat American Tennys Sandgren 7-5 7-5 in a match that finished at 1:25 am local time, with the German advancing to meet Russian Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.

The quarterfinal matchups are Anderson vs. Bhambri, Raonic vs. At 5-6, Thiem had a match point, but would not be able to convert. He comes in and attacks. Anderson, not wanting to waste a challenge, hesitated over what to do.

"Hopefully I can win a few more matches here", Bhambri said.

Canadian third seed Milos Raonic, the 2014 Washington champion, defeated Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 to book a Friday quarter-final against United States eighth seed Jack Sock, who downed countryman Jared Donaldson 7-6 (8/6), 6-2.
