Inquiry into Trump and Russian Federation ramps up with appointment of Grand Jury

Special Counsel Robert Mueller

Special counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury as the federal investigation into Russia's interference in the presidential election intensifies, according to news reports.

The move would signal a new step in the investigation, which Trump has lambasted as a "witch hunt".

Four weeks ago, the New York Times revealed in a report that Trump's eldest son, his son-in-law and former election campaign manager met with a Russian lawyer linked to the Kremlin soon after Trump clinched the Republican presidential nomination past year.

Reuters reported in June that Mueller was taking control over the grand jury investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's lobbying work for a Turkish businessman past year. We won because of you.

Making his first public appearance after the news broke, President Trump told a rally of supporters in West Virginia: "I just hope the final determination is a truly honest one". Mueller declined to comment and President Trump's legal team said they hadn't heard anything about a grand jury. Mueller has the authority to investigate any matters that "arose or may arise directly from the investigation", according to Rosenstein's order appointing Mueller as special counsel.

Just because a grand jury has been set up doesn't mean indictments are going to start flowing. A grand jury may subpoena documents and hear testimony from witnesses to determine if any crimes took place.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham from SC brought forth a bill on Monday to protect Robert Mueller from Trump trying to fire him.

It also said a grand jury in Washington, DC, is more convenient for Mueller and his 16 attorneys - they work just a few blocks from the U.S. federal courthouse where grand juries meet - than one that is far away in Virginia.

When asked about the grand jury, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House Press Secretary said that Jim Comey, the FBI director fired by President Donald Trump, told the president three times that he was not under investigation.

Things are getting very serious with the investigation into President Trump's campaign ties to Russian Federation.

Still, Trump and other White House officials said they hope the convening of a grand jury will speed up the conclusion of the Russian Federation investigation, which has dogged his presidency since the outset, according to RFE/RL.
