Idris Elba to star in The Dark Tower TV series

Competing segments While her husband appeared on GMA the 35-year-old was leading a cooking segment on rival program the Today Show

Matthew McConaughey's eldest son, Levi, who celebrated his 9th birthday this month, is named for the actor's favorite Bible verse, Matthew 6:22, "If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light". However, in his waking life Jake spends most of his time drawing pictures of what he's seen in his dreams, gets into trouble at school, and is the main issue about which his mother Laurie (Katheryn Winnick) and stepfather argue. Jake has unusual dreams and draws prophetic pictures because he has "the shine" about him - sound familiar?

Tom Taylor's Jake and Dennis Haysberg's Steven Deschain are also set to return for the TV series, which would follow a younger Roland and his group as shown in Wizard in Glass, the fourth book in the Dark Tower series.

Overall, I found myself constantly in awe of the world of "The Dark Tower" and its many layers the movie teases, but constantly underwhelmed by how surface level it felt. A scene where Roland saves Jake from what appears to be a number of demons breaking through a thinny comes closest to matching the awe-inspiring weirdness dotted throughout the novels, but the scene immediately undercuts itself by having one of those demons (rendered in highly-questionable CGI) break through and chase Jake around a dilapidated amusement park (in execution, it feels like something out of a Paul WS Anderson joint).

After almost a decade in development, the first film adaptation of Stephen King's beloved magnum opus "The Dark Tower" is finally set to hit the big screen later this week. Originally, "Lost" creators Carlton Cuse and J.J. Abrams were behind the movie's development in 2007 but they optioned the film rights in 2009.

The Dark Tower series is independent from the film and will take place many years before the events depicted in the film, Deadline has learned. The biggest culprit as to why The Dark Tower doesn't work is absolutely the running time.

Nikolaj Arcel, who directed the film, is penning the TV series' script alongside Anders Thomas Jensen. Basically, the series will serve as the origin story for Idris Elba's character in the movies. Another strong voice in the mix was King's, who had the power to veto creative decisions. He plays the campy villain quite effectively - only in a film that never tells the viewer if you are supposed to laugh with or at him.

McConaughey and Elba are the reasons the movie succeeds as well as it does because the movie truly is fun. Good and evil ultimately collide in an ultimate battle in which only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black. Jake has awful nightmares and is compelled to draw the people and places who populate his bad dreams; his mom and his stepfather believe Jake has psychological problems, perhaps as a result of his father's death. Elba's Gunslinger is the last surviving member of a league of warriors dedicated to the protection of the tower. While there is one particular instance in which Roland's money shot pays off, the shootout scenes are reminiscent of Timur Bekmambetov's Wanted, but with notably less style.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is an epic mishmash of Lord of the Rings, Spaghetti Westerns, Arthurian legend and horror which plays out across seven core tomes.

The movie's director, Nik Arcel, spoke to IGN about finding the balance of appealing to both fans of The Dark Tower and newcomers, highlighting the importance of getting the tone and spirit of the source material right.

The Dark Tower hasn't had an easy journey to screen.

The bad news is the reviews so far have not been kind to Nikolaj Arcel's effort with one critic, Kate Erbland of Indiewire to be precise, calling it a "disaster of a film".

The Dark Tower starts playing in USA theaters Thursday August 3.

Rated: PG-13 for thematic material including sequences of gun violence and action.
