Dow Jones Industrial average on Monday's trade hits intra-day high and closed at record high, adding last week's performance.

The rise in the Dow also put the blue-chip index on track to close higher for the 10th straight day, its longest streak of consecutive gains since February.

U.S. stock indexes opened lower on Tuesday as investors paused after a recent record-breaking rally that helped the Dow notch up nine straight sessions of record close.

The S&P (500 stocks) is much bigger and it too had a record close today.

But much better data on USA job openings from a survey called JOLTS shocked the market, leading equities on both sides of the Atlantic to push into positive territory. Market volume was higher compared with the same time Monday. The Nasdaq composite climbed 30 points, or 0.5 percent, to 6,414.

The energy sector led the laggards with a 0.9 percent drop as oil prices edged lower on a rebound in production from Libya's largest oil field, along with worries about higher output from OPEC and the United States.

Analysts, on average, expect S&P 500 earnings to have expanded 12 percent in the second quarter and project earnings up 9.3 percent for the September quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Six of the 11 major S&P sectors were higher, with the consumer staples and technology leading the advancers.

Rockwell Collins, which makes communications and avionics systems, jumped 6.8 per cent on reports United Technologies is considering a bid to buy the company.

Macy's, Kohl's, JC Penney are expected to report results this week, with Wal-Mart, Target due next week.

Also on investors' radar is the rush of retail earnings this week and next amid Amazon.com's rapid rise. On the Nasdaq, 1,526 issues rose and 1,301 fell.
