Ezekiel Elliot releases statement regarding six-game suspension

Elliott led the NFL in total rushing yards for the 2016 season

Needless to say, Twitter has plenty to say regarding a suspension more severe than what had been given to documented wife beaters. Though Elliott was never charged criminally after a former girlfriend accused him of domestic violence in Columbus, Ohio over a year ago, National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell made the decision to suspend Elliott after soliciting recommendations from a four-person independent panel.

In the statement made available to the press, NFL league said it found "substantial and persuasive evidence" that the footballer assaulted the accuser, and that if Elliott violates the policy ever again, he could be banned for life.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Elliott is expected to appeal the ruling, but it's unlikely that the penalty will be lightened.

Dallas Cowboys star running back #Ezekiel Elliott has finally been handed a punishment by the #NFL after months of speculation and waiting.

Last September, the office of Columbus City Attorney Richard Pfeiffer cited conflicting and inconsistent information in the evidence in deciding against criminal charges.

Elliot will be able to participate in preseason activities, but with the suspension taking effect he wouldn't be eligible to return to the team's active roster until October 23.

Back in July, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said there was no evidence of a domestic violence incident. Prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to convict Elliott of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

After going 13-3 previous year and narrowly missing out on a trip to the NFC Championship, there's been plenty of excitement in Texas regarding the Cowboys' upcoming season.

In March, he faced major backlash after a video surfaced, showing how he exposed a woman's breasts during the Dallas, Texas, St. Patrick's Day parade, without her consent. If he does file, Elliott would then to schedule a hearing with the league within ten days of receipt of the notice.

Elliott's suspension rachets up the pressure on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott to lead the team over three of the league's toughest defenses in the Giants, Broncos and Cardinals to start the season, with two of those games coming on the road.
