France orders national investigation amid Europe tainted egg scandal

United Kingdom eggs from the supermarket have been confirmed safe by the company.

In a statement, Qatar's Ministry of Public Health said egg imports in Qatar come from 10 different nations.

Mr Travert said on RMC radio that some 244,000 eggs imported from the Netherlands and Belgium and sold in France were affected.

Numerous eggs were mixed with others which had not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues would be highly diluted, it added.

The British Egg Industry Council said shell eggs on sale to consumers in the United Kingdom were not affected.

"The egg industry believes that this is a great opportunity for retailers to listen to the concerns of their customers and reassure them by specifying the use of British eggs and using the Made with British Lion eggs logo on packs".

Tensions have been running high between ministers and junior ministers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany ever since the harmful delousing pesticide, thought to have sold by Dutch company Chickfriend, was found in the eggs. A number of eggs and egg-related products such as salads, quiches and sandwiches have already been withdrawn from major United Kingdom supermarkets. Scores of farms have been shut.

Chris Elliot, director of the Institute for Global Food Security, questioned why food regulators had been "so slow" to react to the contaminated egg scandal.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's PM programme, the professor said the blame game "will continue on for many months".

"The potential is that number of 700,000 could increase quite a bit yet", he added.

The Danish food administration have asked people to keep calm as they claim that eating the eggs bought by Danæg Products poses no risk in human consumption.

About 700,000 of the eggs were distributed to the United Kingdom, with The Telegraph reporting that the British food safety watchdog had confirmed eggs may have already been eaten by consumers.

It is why the Food Standards Agency says it is "very unlikely" there is any health risk.

According to the FSA, the products affected are processed foods in which egg is one ingredient among many others, mostly used in sandwich fillings or other chilled foods.

The insecticide can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities.

FSA chairwoman Heather Hancock said: "I'm confident that acting quickly is the right thing to do".

The outbreak is believed to have originated in the Netherlands, the European Union's biggest egg exporter, according to Eurostat data.

Aldi and Lidl stores in Germany are among the supermarkets to remove eggs from their shelves, in a move Aldi described as "purely precautionary".

Aldi said it was "purely precautionary" and added that those sold in its United Kingdom outlets are produced in Britain.

Dutch prosecutors added that they were working in coordination with Europol, and in tandem with a similar investigation in Belgium, where authorities also raided several businesses today.

Germany and France -where a few farms are directly affected by blockages- have sharply tancé Belgium and the netherlands.

It has since emerged Belgian officials knew about the contamination in June, but did not make the information public.

More than 100 poultry farms were closed during the investigation and at least 26 suspects were identified.

A criminal investigation is under way in Belgium and the Netherlands, centring on two firms - Poultry Vision, a pest control firm from Belgium, which is alleged to have sold the treatment to a Dutch poultry farm cleaning company, Chickfriend.
