BC to boost minimum wage by 50 cents to $11.35

NDP are giving minimum wage workers a pay hike as they inch toward an eventual $15 minimum wage

That's what the B.C. government intends to do, fulfilling a promise made in the NDP election platform to raise the wage to $15 by 2021.

"British Columbia's lowest-paid workers need a raise", Premier Horgan said in a statement that came with the August 15 announcement of the "long overdue" minimum wage hike.

A percentage wage increase will be applied to employees, including live-in home support, camp workers and piecework farm workers.

A 50-cent increase announced by the previous Liberal government will go ahead as planned on September 15, bringing the wage to $11.35 per hour, Bains said.

The composition will focus on gradually achieving a $15 an hour minimum wage by 2021. "But what they need to do is have it in a sustainable fashion where they know where that increase is coming so that they can plan for it, that is critically important and that the jump in the rate isn't too such an extent that they can't manage it through their cash flow".

During the press conference, Bains was asked if there would be any sort of tax cut applied to employers of small businesses who may not be able to afford to pay the increased wage.

It will increase the wages of about 94,000 workers.

A living wage in Vancouver is pegged at $20 an hour, leaving the increase $5 short of that.

"Today's increase and our commitment to the $15 minimum wage will benefit nearly 100,000 British Columbians who have been getting by on one of the lowest minimum wages in the country", said Horgan, adding that 62% of minimum-wage earners are women.

"At the same time we're raising the minimum wage in an incremental way, in a predictable way, so that we can narrow that gap".

Who will sit on the commission and its cost are still to be determined, Bains said.

"Restaurants Canada is pleased that the BC government is maintaining the previously-announced 2017 minimum wage increases that small businesses have been preparing for".

Bains says the commission is expected to report back on its decision by late December or early January.

Bains also said the government had committed to creating a Poverty Reduction Plan and a minimum wage increase would surely be a part of that too.
