Amit Shah says, will not join Cabinet, fine as chief

Amit Shah

On the last day of his three-day visit to the Uttar Pradesh state capital, Shah addressed the media and said that establishment of the Ram temple at Ayodhya was a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) agenda.

Shah accused the Congress of hatching a conspiracy to not approve the bill, though it was passed by the Lok Sabha and approved by the select committee.

The Opposition's amendments were passed by 74 to 52 votes. At that time to MPs from the BJP and other NDA allies were not present in the House.

He also lambasted the Opposition for terming his lunch at the party workers residence as caste-based politics."I have lunch at the residence of the workers just to show them how much they are important to us and there is no such politics in it", he added.

On Monday, when amendments were moved by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, demanding that a woman and a member from minority community be included in the Commission, the bill was put to vote. The situation left leader of the house Arun Jaitley and MoS for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi virtually helpless.

Among the ministers not present in the House were Ravi Shankar Prasad, Piyush Goyal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Smriti Irani, MJ Akbar and Nirmala Sitharaman.

The party chief, who is set to enter Upper House when the election takes place on August 8, also explained that the three line whip issued by the party meant that they have to be in House for participation in the legislative business.

He said the Congress had "hatched a conspiracy" against the backward classes and the party's behaviour in the Rajya Sabha "exposes its anti-backward mindset" and MPs need to expose it, sources said. "He said it should not have happened and must not be repeated", Kumar said.

Referring to Bihar incident, Mr Shah said,"BJP did not break any party".

Sitaram Yechury of the CPM said that Rajya Sabha members were not even informed about the inauguration. But soon the two understood the folly that it would lead to not having the Backward Classes Commission in force as the constitutional bill is already in limbo.

The BJP state leader said the party is planning to contest in all the 60 seats and the final decision in this regard will be taken by the central leadership.
