Will the Cavaliers honor Kyrie Irving's request?

Derrick Rose may soon have a deal done with the Cavaliers

Having time to absorb the idea that Irving wants to play for the Timberwolves leads inevitably to questions of how Minnesota would pull off such a deal and whether it would be worth it.

Last Friday ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers because he wants to be in a position where he can be the focal point, and no longer wants to play alongside LeBron James. Irving is due $60 million over the next three seasons.

The free agent guard and former league MVP is meeting Monday with the Cavs to discuss a contract, two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. Most expect to see Kyrie Irving in a Cavaliers jersey next season, but with the new office management in Cleveland, anything is possible. Irving's request puts the Cavaliers in a situation where they might not receive fair value for the point guard.

Irving is one of the best point guards in the National Basketball Association, and deserves a king's ransom. Kyrie has deservedly earned a poor reputation on defense, but with Leonard and Danny Green (if San Antonio can keep him in the Irving trade) flanking him on the wings and Popovich finding ways to hide his deficiencies, his defensive struggles would be minimized. That he didn't like seeing James' friends getting special treatment from the franchise compared to his own friends.

Rose averaged 32.5 minutes and 18 points per game last season, his first with the New York Knicks. Bledsoe is a capable outside shooter and playmaker, but his value with the Cavs would start at the defensive end, especially if the Cavs sets a date with the Golden State Warriors for the National Basketball Association title next season.

After losing their second NBA Finals in three years to the Golden State Warriors, the Cleveland Cavaliers have suddenly found themselves in a state of uncertainty for the first time since LeBron James returned to the city three years ago. He's not the passer Wall is, but he shot over 40% from three in two of the last three seasons and maybe after all we've been underestimating him as a facilitator and basketball visionary.

LeBron James has already made his case that he's going absolutely nowhere, regardless of what happens. No one really knows. Irving's way out from the team could mean a chance for Rose to get in. It's the latest development in a whirlwind offseason of negative developments for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
