Venus rises to eclipse her young pretenders

Wimbledon 2017 Jelena Ostapenko Simona Halep Mats Wilander All England Club

Williams will next face the French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko, in the quarter-finals.

Coached here by 1987 men's Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, she marched on with an impressive 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 victory over fifth seed, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.

Venus Williams' last three opponents at Wimbledon have been aged 20 or under and one by one she has vanquished them, proving at 37 that Grand Slam tennis is not exclusively the preserve of the Love Island generation.

This Wimbledon run is proving to be a special one for Williams, who is chasing her first title since winning at the All England Club in 2009.

Konta was reduced to tears by what she felt were threats and intimidation from the Romanian fans in Constanta during her match against Sorana Cirstea, but Halep fanned the flames this week when she claimed her compatriots had done nothing wrong.

The 37 year old has beaten French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 7-5.

On Centre Court, Williams won all her nine service games, faced only two break points, crackled with 24 winners (to 12 for Konjuh) and made only 13 unforced errors in a performance that was reasonably close to airtight. The contest was held over after the marathon battle between Rafael Nadal and Gilles Muller finished late on Monday.

The 23-year-old needed 75 minutes to beat Kuznetsova, seeded No.7, who has never gone beyond the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in three previous attempts, reports Efe.

"They discuss the schedule before the matches, and I know it's always not so easy. But, you know, I'm sure that the women, we would want more matches on Centre or Court No. 1 over the whole fortnight", Venus said.

In fact, Washington Post called Venus "ageless", hinting that she is now playing her best tennis, and that the young players must fire up their guns to make it past her. Soon enough, she won her maiden slam two years later at Flushing Meadows against Martina Hingis. So far these two players have played only one match.

"She was serving really well, which made it very tough to break", Ostapenko understated.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams scaled through her last eight match keeping her hopes of winning a sixth Wimbledon title alive.

Muguruza, who has reached the last four for the loss of one set, brought up match point with an ace down the middle and won it courtesy of another big serve to earn a semi-final meeting with Magdalena Rybarikova or Coco Vandeweghe, whose match was delayed by rain. The first of her trophies at the grass-court tournament came in 2000. I could not imagine I could play like this, I was very focused. Good. "And I think I'm quite skilful". She was the first woman to win her debut tour-level title at a Grand Slam tournament since 1979.

"I really can not believe it, " gasped the 87th-ranked Rybarikova, the eighth lowest ranked slam semifinalist in history.
