US Senate eyes 'skinny' Obamacare repeal

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell arrives at the U.S. Capitol

Republican Arizona Senator John McCain cast the decisive vote to defeat the proposal, joining two other Republicans, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, in opposing it, reports The New York Times.

It was a result that may have been hinted at earlier in the week.

Republicans hold a 52-48 majority in the Senate.

It was a fiery and intense lecture on the shortcomings of bypassing "regular order" and turning your back on compromise.

McCain had just saved the signature legislative achievement of the man who beat him for the presidency in 2008, a law the senator himself had vigorously campaigned against while seeking a sixth Senate term previous year.

On Tuesday evening, however, the amendment package could not even get to 50 votes; it needed 60 to pass. Joining Corker in opposition were Sens.

After a comprehensive bill failed on the Senate floor, and a straight-up repeal failed too, McConnell and his top lieutenants turned toward a lowest-common-denominator solution known as "skinny repeal". And when that didn't work, Vice President Mike Pence swooped in. No legislation and little guidance have been offered on the matter by President Donald Trump, although he has berated the Senate for its inaction. Richard Burr, R-N.C. Lindsey Graham of SC. McCain then voted in favor of the motion to proceed with debate of the ACA's repeal. The former prisoner of war stood stood with Democrats to release a report on the use of enhanced interrogation techniques during the Bush years.

For no other reason than to be divisive and cater to his morally bankrupt base, Trump started off today being even more very bad than usual, declaring that transgender people will not be allowed to serve in the military in any capacity.

The skinny bill would retroactively repeal the Obamacare penalty on individuals who do not purchase health insurance, repeal for eight years a penalty on certain employers who do not provide employees with health insurance and repeal a medical device tax through the end of 2020. In 2005, Rep. Sam Johnson, who shared a cell with McCain in Hanoi and nonetheless had endorsed George W. Bush over him in the 2000 presidential primaries, tried to get House Republicans to back a letter opposing McCain's effort to outlaw torture; not a single member signed his or her name. "I like people who weren't captured".

"He's not a war hero", Trump told a gathering of religious conservatives.

Supposedly the plan was to go to a conference committee where House and Senate leaders would finally come up with a Republican health care plan that worked.

McCain was not budging, even after taking a short phone call from the president. "Watch!", Trump tweeted following his defeat. As he was speaking to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. "We should not make the mistakes of the past".

"John McCain is a hero and has courage and does the right thing", Schumer said afterwards. He was joined by Sens.

"I think the American people are going to regret that we couldn't find a better way forward".

However, a majority of Americans are ready to move on from healthcare at this point.

"Bailing out insurance companies with no thought of any kind of reform is not something I want to be part of and I suspect that not many folks over here that are interested in that", McConnell said, drawing the line on the potential bipartisan road ahead.

Later, as he got into his vehicle to leave the Capitol, McCain was asked, "Why did you vote no?"
