PM May shed a 'little tear' on losing majority

By William James and Elizabeth Piper

THERESA MAY today admitted she wept when she heard the result of the exit poll which showed she had lost her Commons majority.

"I knew the campaign wasn't going perfectly but, still, the messages I was getting. were that we were going to get a better result than we did".

May, who at the time commanded only a slim majority in parliament, said she made a decision to call the snap election in order to secure a strong mandate from the British public for her approach to Brexit negotiations with the EU.

"It took a few minutes for that to sink in, what it was telling me - my husband gave me a hug, and then I got on the phone to the Conservative party to find out what had happened".

"What I am focusing on now, is over the next few years making sure that we do the Brexit negotiations we make a success of it but also that we open up those other opportunities", May said.

May said she had increased respect for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was often targeted by the party since his election as leader in 2010.

When asked if she was devastated enough to shed a tear, Mrs May replied: 'Yes, a little tear ... at that moment'.

"When it came to the actual result there were a lot of people within the party who had been very close to the campaign who were genuinely shocked by the result as it came through. So when the result came through it was a complete shock".

British PM laments message "did not come across" during failed campaign.

A year since she set out her vision on the steps of 10 Downing Street after becoming Prime Minister, May now leads a minority government, shored up by a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland.

Mrs May said it was "distressing" to see good colleagues losing their seats.

"The reality I now face as prime minister is rather different", said May, adding: "It will be even more important to make the case for our policies and our values, and to win the battle of ideas both in parliament as well as in the country".

"I don't regret calling it, I think it was the right thing to do at the time".

"It wasn't the case that there was a point in time where it was sort of, suddenly, "We've got to change direction in this campaign, or do this in the campaign rather than what we were doing previously", she said.
