OJ Simpson Granted Parole, Search For Real Killer Could Resume Oct. 1

TENSE OJ sits before the board

Former football star O.J. Simpson has been granted parole from a Nevada prison after serving nine years for armed robbery.

Simpson was convicted in 2008 in Las Vegas after he and five other men who were carrying guns, confronted two sports memorabilia dealers and took pieces of memorabilia from them.

After a freakish, hour-long hearing, the board recessed before returning 20 minutes later to announce the father of five is to be released from prison in October.

According to The Daily Beast, Simpson was responding to a question about whether he may exhibit violent tendencies if he were to be released from prison.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you", Simpson said as the board announced their decision.

The former National Football League star is infamously known for the 1995 acquittal of the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.

"I think it's an insult to every woman who's ever lived in a battered-wife relationship, to consider (his life) not being a conflict", Fred Goldman told CTV News Channel.

Bruce Fromong, the only surviving victim of the 2007 memorabilia robbery and a friend of Simpson's, testified in favor of granting Simpson's parole in the hearing. "Right now I'm at a point in my life where all I want to do is spend time, as much time as I can, with my children and friends".

Among his remarks, he said: "I've done my time".

Daughter Arnelle Simpson had also spoken in support of her father. I feel like it's time to give him a second chance and let him go home to his friends and family.

Simpson told the board that he is sorry "that things turned out the way they did" and had no intent to commit a crime.

"I've realised in my nine years here that I was a good person, but I could have been a better Christian". Simpson now can start counting the days until he leaves custody following his success in the "parole hearing of the century".

"He is not the flawless man", she admits, but says that her father "truly is remorseful".

When the final vote to grant parole was read after parole commissioners deliberated just over 30 minutes, Simpson lowered his head and then raised it up with a big smile. Simpson was famously acquitted of the crime but lost a multimillion-dollar civil lawsuit brought by the family of Ron Goldman.
