NDA names Venkaiah Naidu as its vice presidential candidate

Vice-Presidential Election 2017: Gopalkrishna Gandhi seeks AIADMK support

Having been imprisoned during Emergency, he went on to become the youth wing president of Janata Party in Andhra Pradesh upon his release in 1977 and in a political journey spanning almost four decades rose up the ranks to become BJP's national president in 2002 and in 2004.

Disclosing the information, BJP President Amit Shah told reporters after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board that a decision was arrived and Naidu has been unanimously nominated to be the NDA's Vice presidential candidate.

The former BJP president is pitted against Gopal Krishna Gandhi, who was chosen by an alliance of 18 opposition parties, including the Congress.

He also became the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government after National Democratic Alliance (NDA) registered a victory in the 1999 General Elections. "The way ahead is very clear", he said, underlining the clear majority enjoyed by the NDA candidate.

A graduate in law, Naidu has also been a member and chairperson of several parliamentary committees and is well-versed with the functioning of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly attended the meeting.

A total of 776 MPs and 4,120 MLAs were eligible to vote. "We must have confidence in the values we believe in", she added.

Sonia said, "The election demands a vote of conscience to preserve the India that the Mahatma and that illustrious generation of freedom fighters, joined by thousands upon thousands of ordinary men and women, fought for". The polling will be held on the 5th of next month and counting will take place on the same day. But the battle must be fought and fought hard. As many as 17 non-NDA parties, including Congress, the Left parties, TMC, BSP, SP, DMK, NCP, RJD, JMM JD-S and NC, are supporting Meira Kumar.

Gandhi, 72, had a distinguished career in the civil service before he became a diplomat and governor.
