Michael Oher Released by Carolina Panthers After Failed Physical

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers officially cut ties with Oher Thursday, but that may be the least of his issues.

A press release from the team states that Oher started the first of three games in the 2016 season before a concussion caused him to remain inactive for the next seven games.

The 31-year-old posted and quickly deleted an Instagram photo showing 10 pill bottles with the caption, "all for the brain" back in June that had everybody anxious about his longterm health.

Oher was the subject of the movie "The Blind Side".

Oher's approaching a year in concussion protocol and there now isn't a timeline for his return, leaving his career in serious jeopardy. He's played with the Ravens, Titans and Panthers during his National Football League career.

Oher tweeted Thursday after his release that the "brain is a scary thing". Earlier in the day, he gave right guard Trai Turner a four-year, $45 million extension with $20.45 million guaranteed.

He played for the Tennessee Titans in 2014. The Panthers signed him to a two-year $7 million contract in 2015.

The Panthers hired former general manager Marty Hurney as their interim general manager on Wednesday.

Oher was a member of the 2012 Ravens Super Bowl team.

This past summer, The Charlotte Observer stated that the Panthers coach, Ron Rivera didn't say much about Oher, but "did not sound like a coach who expects to have Oher with him in Spartanburg".
