Larijani calls for unity to counter United States sanctions

With relations with Iran already tense the US Treasury imposed fresh sanctions

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Thursday that Iran's test violated a United Nations resolution which endorsed the 2015 deal and calls upon Tehran not to conduct activities related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on six Iranian firms owned or controlled by the Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday hit Iran with new sanctions for its Thursday launch of a satellite-carrying rocket. While Iran insists its space programme is for peaceful purposes, officials in the U.S. have long said any components used to put a satellite into orbit can also be used for building an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the US. The action breaches a UN Security Council resolution due to the possibility that it could be used in ballistic missile development, according to the State Department.

In an analysis written previous year, arms control expert Jeffrey Lewis explained that the technology employed by Iran's Simorgh rocket appears to be the same used in North Korea's Unha SLV series, which the US intelligence community has concluded "could be used for an ICBM-class vehicle" capable of carrying nuclear weapons to the U.S.

Iran, however, insists the test was a success, and their statements don't claim a satellite was put into orbit, only that the rocket, which has been worked on since 2010, is now capable of doing so.

YouTube: A Simorgh rocket was launched from the Imam Khomeini National Space Center, Iran, on 27 July 2017.

The Treasury move was announced just hours after the US Senate voted nearly unanimously to impose new sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea.

He also rejected the notion that Iran was working to develop missiles that could carry a nuclear warhead. "Iran is not and will not be developing nuclear weapons; so by definition can not develop anything created to be capable of delivering them", he tweeted. Zarif contrasted that with the US, which he suggested was not complying with "the letter and spirit" of the deal.
