Jordanian killed and Israeli wounded at Amman embassy 'incident': security source

Jordanian street voices anger over Al Aqsa restrictions

Two Jordanians were killed in a shootout inside the Israeli embassy in Amman, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Jordanian police want to question the guard and have sealed off the area, but Israel says he has diplomatic immunity.

The Israeli was in an "unstable" condition, the news site said.

"In accordance with the Vienna Convention, the security officer has immunity from investigation and imprisonment", the Israeli foreign ministry said.

An Israeli Embassy guard in Amman, Jordan, killed his 17-year-old assailant and a bystander after being stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver.

Israeli media said Jordan has demanded to conduct an investigation and has prevented Israeli embassy staff from leaving the premises.

The Israeli diplomatic team remains confined to the embassy compound, despite plans to evacuate the embassy staff and return them to Israel, Haaretz reported. However, the ministry said it was working with the local officials.

The occupied Palestinian territories have witnessed new tensions ever since Israeli forces introduced restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem al-Quds in August 2015.

The incident comes at a time of heightened tension in the region over a Jerusalem holy site, where Jordan has an historical role as custodian.

The Israeli statement said that according to worldwide conventions, the guard has legal immunity.

Oded Eran, a former Israeli Ambassador to Jordan, told journalists that in the short term security should be stepped up outside the embassy and in the long term Jordan should "tone down their statements on Jeruslem and events at Temple Mount".

Following repeated clashes on the Temple Mount in late 2015 and the beginning of 2016, Jordan said it would install security cameras on the Temple Mount to "expose Israeli assaults and violations".

As part of intensifying diplomatic efforts, President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy, Jason Greenblatt, met with Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday.

The escalation began earlier this month when Arab gunmen fired from the holy site, killing two Israeli policemen.

Israel's security Cabinet held a meeting to discuss new security measures as well as recent violence including the incident at the embassy in Amman. The Israeli authorities have not commented and nearly imposed a press silence. Metal detectors installed at entrances to the mosque have become a symbol of the broader struggle over control of the contested compound.
