Israeli forces wound 22 Palestinians in Jerusalem's Old City

Israeli security forces stand guard in front of Palestinian Muslim worshippers praying outside Lions Gate a main entrance to Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem's Old City

On Friday, Israeli authorities announced that Muslim men under 50 are barred from entering the compound.

The escalation of violence comes after two Israeli soldiers were killed by three attackers at the Temple Mount last week.

Officials said 3,000 attended several protests over the detectors Israel placed near a site holy to both Jews and Muslims.

A Palestinian youth was shot dead, but the circumstances are not yet clear.

Clashes have been taking place across East Jerusalem, with Palestinians furious at security measures imposed at the ultra-sensitive Al-Aqsa mosque.

Witnesses cited by the agency said Sharaf was shot in the neck, although the precise circumstances have not been confirmed.

According to a report on Al Jazeera, the Palestinian Prisoner's Club has claimed that Jerusalem's Fatah leader, Hatem Abdel Khader, is among ten Palestinian activist who have been detained.

Three Israelis were killed in what appeared to be a terrorist attack in a West Bank settlement hours after three Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces.

Extra security measures were put in place at the complex - known as the Temple Mount by Jews and the Noble Sanctuary by Muslims - after three Arab Israelis attacked a patrol near Lion's Gate a week ago, killing two policemen.

The new restrictive measures have seen the regime in Israel install metal detectors at entry points to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

A hospital in Jerusalem reported to the Associated Press that a second man was killed by live fire after demonstrations led to clashes following Friday noon prayers.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the metal detectors will stay up for now but added he will have "additional security consultations" in the future about the issue.

The mosque was reopened on Sunday but after metal detectors were installed, a move the Palestinians said they will not accept because it changes the status quo at the mosque.

The unrest follows revelations on Thursday that Israel's Construction and Housing Ministry is planning a further expansion of settlements which could cut off East Jerusalem from the West Bank city of Ramallah.
