Iran warns to respond firmly to US House 'hostile' move

Iran vows to respond to US sanctions

The UN and other signatories to the nuclear deal have agreed that Iran has stuck to its commitments, which has been reluctantly accepted by the administration of President Donald Trump. "Believe me", he said. While the Trump administration seeks to police the existing deal more strictly, it is also working to fix what Trump's aides have called "serious flaws" in the landmark deal that - if not resolved quickly - will likely lead Trump to pull out.

On the same day, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that the president had ordered an interagency review into the agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to determine whether the suspension of sanctions under the deal was vital to USA national security interests. "But the sponsors of the legislation would say its entirely consistent with the JCPOA- and as evidence of that, they would point to comments from the Obama administration at the time, who said the U.S. was only obligated to end its nuclear-related sanctions". Zarif has previously cast any US efforts at punishing Iran for its ballistic missile program or ongoing support for Bashar Al-Assad's regime in Syria as violations of the nuclear deal, indicating that the country may withdraw if it sees no increased economic benefit in the coming year.

"And, personally, I have great respect for my people". Trump devoted part of his speech in Youngstown, Ohio, to Iran.

President Trump used this latest issue as an opportunity to threaten Iran in more general terms, insisting if they don't "conform" the his expectations "it's going to be big, big problems for them".

"We'll talk about the subject in 90 days but I would be surprised if they were in compliance", he told WSJ.

What he means by that isn't clear, but State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said "Iran's other malign activities are serving to undercut whatever positive contributions to regional and worldwide peace and security were intended to emerge" from the deal. He continued, "We gave up all of our leverage already". "Instead, they've become emboldened".

In early 2016, the Obama administration handed Iran $400 million in foreign currency banknotes in what it said was settlement of a 37-year-old legal dispute with the regime - plus an additional $1.3 billion in interest, which the Treasury Department later confirmed was also provided in cash.
