Illinois unemployment rate up slightly despite job growth

The figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security Thursday show the state's unemployment rate rose to 4.7 percent in June from 4.6 percent in May.

The biggest monthly job decline in Weld came in the service-providing and government sectors, which lost 1,000 and 1,400 jobs over the month, respectively.

June's statewide unemployment rate now stands at 3.2%, which is up one-tenth from May.

Overall, Weld in June gained another 300 jobs in the mining, logging and construction sector - which includes the oil and gas industry - over the month, bringing year-to-date addition to 1,300.

The bureau of labor statistics estimates the number of unemployed people in the IL workforce increased by 1.2 percent last month.

An estimated 3,000 people were seeking jobs a year ago, compared to 2,700 this June.

Napa County has the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the state.

Business services, education and health services, and leisure and hospitality saw the largest job gains in June, with the largest over the month declines in construction and information.

"Right now, the over-the-year growth isn't negative", he said. Nationally, the unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage point in June to 4.4 percent.

Gedney, however, questioned the construction employment estimates for June, saying he didn't think those moved lower.

They say professional and business services increased by 1,600 jobs during the same time. Alaska had the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 6.8 percent, Gedney said. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 800 jobs.

The Office of Employment and Training says last month's seasonally adjusted preliminary rate was 5.1 percent.
