Hamilton aiming for second place on Sunday

Bottas holds off Vettel to win in Austria

Bottas started qualifying knowing he was likely to be Mercedes's lead qualifier because teammate Lewis Hamilton was carrying a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

His team mate Valtteri Bottas will start from pole position, for the second time in his Formula One career, with Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel joining the Finn on the front row.

"Considering how hard or bad - whichever way you want to look at it - the weekend has been, we're going to start third place tomorrow so that's at least something good", Raikkonen said.

"I enjoyed it today", said Bottas after giving Mercedes its 80th pole position. "The vehicle was getting better and better as the day went on and I'm very happy to be on pole", Bottas said, whose fastest lap was 1 minute, 4.251 seconds at the Spielberg circuit.

"But I will give it everything I can and of course I would be happy if I could get up there".

Lewis Hamilton has set the pace in the Austrian Grand Prix practice. But we've just have to push together as a team and fight back. He did a fantastic job and has been driving very well all weekend and obviously Sebastian is very quick this weekend.

And he looked like he had the pace to be potentially fastest then, too - which would have meant starting sixth following his penalty for an unauthorised gearbox change - but he made crucial mistakes on all his laps before a yellow flag for a stranded auto effectively ended the session early.

The Mercedes driver repeated his FP1-topping form on Friday afternoon with a 1m05.483s that put him 0.147s clear of Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari. "If you start playing games it gets tricky, if the auto behind gets DRS and the slipstream, then with just one mistake they can get the win".

Elsewhere, Kimi Raikkonen came home in fourth place, with the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo in fifth and sixth, respectively.

He trails Vettel by 14 points after eight races, with both winning three times. "Got the vehicle nice and stable for qualifying and was able to build up the confidence and this is a track where you really need it in the high-speed corners".

"Two other comments I could say".

"It should be a good race".

"The reason why, as president of the FIA, I felt uncomfortable was because of what I heard about Lewis Hamilton not doing anything different from what he had done under the previous Safety Car".

But his Williams teammate Felipe Massa hardly fared better and starts from 17th.
