Hamburg supermarket attacker 'was known Islamist'

One dead, several wounded in knife attack at German supermarket

A 50-year-old woman and four men aged between 19 and 64 were stabbed during the initial attack, while a 35-year-old man was injured while helping overcome the suspect.

His first victim, believed to be a 50-year-old German man, died at the scene.

- Who was the attacker?

According to Telegraph UK, the man ran into a supermarket in the neighbourhood of Barmbek and started attacking customers with a knife at around 3 am local time.

A Tunisian failed asylum seeker killed 12 people by driving a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in December, slipping through the net after intelligence officers who had monitored him reached the conclusion he was no threat. But no links to terrorist or Islamist networks on the part of the suspect, who was taken.

Police identified the attacker as a 26-year-old man born in the United Arab Emirates, but his citizenship was unclear.

"It was definitely a lone attacker", Hamburg police said on Twitter.

A police spokeswoman said the "Allahu Akhbar" accounts could not be confirmed.

The suspect has not yet talked about Friday's attack, prosecutor Joerg Froehlich said, though he has indicated he acted alone.

She said the predictable response from the German government and media in the aftermath of the attack will be to side with the Islamists against their own people.

On July 18, 2016, a 17-year-old asylum seeker, wielding an axe and a knife, attacks passengers on a Bavarian train. "First reports about a possible robbery can not be confirmed so far", he said.

The attacker had been scheduled to be deported, but the process had been held up as he lacked identity papers, Scholz said.

"It's also infuriating that this perpetrator is someone who asked for protection in Germany and then turned his hate against us", Scholz said.

The similarity between the cases risks reopening wounds over Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to allow more than a million migrants into Germany since 2015.

But both German newspaper BILD and a witness to the assault said the man yelled "Allahu Akbar" during the bloody spree.
