Gang jailed for killing Russian politician Boris Nemtsov

Gunned down Opposition politician Boris Nemtsov was shot dead yards from the Kremlin by a group of hired assassins in February 2015 the most high profile political killing since Vladimir Putin became president 17 years ago

The Moscow District Military Court has sentenced Zaur Dadayev, whom the jury earlier found guilty of killing opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, to 20 years in prison, an Interfax correspondent reported from the courthouse.

The other four Chechen men convicted of being his accomplices received jail sentences ranging from 11 to 19 years.

One of the young liberal politicians who sprang to prominence after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Nemtsov was once considered a possible successor by Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russian Federation.

Nemtsov, who once served as Russia's deputy prime minister, was a pro-Kiev political figure and an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the trial the judge refused a request to summon Kadyrov for questioning.

Noteworthy, prosecutors demanded a life sentence for Dadayev.

In March 2015, Russian police arrested five suspects, including two suspected hit men.

In the months before his death he had written detailed reports alleging corruption by Putin, and voiced fears that the Russian president would have him killed.

Those convicted - Dadayev, brothers Shadid and Anzor Gubashev, Temirlan Eskerkhanov and Khamzat Bakhayev - are all ethnic Chechens from Russia's volatile North Caucasus.

Nemtsov was shot in the back by Zaur Dadayev, a senior officer in a paramilitary unit under the command of Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, as he crossed the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge in Moscow.

But the late politician's allies said the investigation had been a cover-up and that the people who had ordered his killing remained at large.

Nemtsov's family said they "will continue to seek legal action against the organizers and the individuals" in the targeted killing.

Despite the guilty verdict handed out by the court last week, Nemtsov's relatives and supporters argue the men in the court-room are mere pawns.
