Elon Musk seems to have ditched Red Dragon lander plan for Mars

Musk says government likes plan for high-speed tunnels

Elon Musk tweeted earlier this morning that he received government approval to start building a New York-Philadelphia-Baltimore-D.C Hyperloop, as reported by engadget.

Musk isn't willing to stop with NY and D.C. The billionaire entrepreneur continued to tease his plans on Twitter, replying to another user asking about a potential hyperloop system in Texas. As this plan was made public on a social networking platform that limits individual missives to 140 characters (Twitter, of course), details are understandably sparse.

But the White House confirmed it had "positive discussions" about the tunnel with Musk and executives from his underground drilling enterprise, The Boring Co.

Musk has not said who gave him the verbal approval. A specific agency like the Department Of Transportation, for example, or even higher up like Donald Trump?

While the hyperloop is Musk's idea, he hasn't taken on the project personally.

While we await answers, here are the few facts we do know.

Musk further detailed in a subsequent tweet that the route would be from "city center to city center, in each case, with up to a dozen or more entry/exit elevators in each city". "Then prob LA-SF and a TX loop".

Elon Musk says it's possible and he has the government's approval to do it (though it's anyone's guess which government or how long it'd take to build).

Either way, Musk's Boring Company will need more than a nod to build the high-speed transit system between two major cities.

The project would be run through The Boring Company, Musk's tunneling venture, which has already begun test digging near SpaceX HQ in California.

By traveling in vacuum tubes on magnetic cushions, hyperloop trains would avoid being slowed down by air pressure or the friction of wheels on rails, making them faster and cheaper to operate, supporters say.

Apparently, local officials in charge of the cities involved were not looped into the conversation; New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's press secretary tweeted that "this is news to City Hall".

On Wednesday, at the International Space Station Research & Development conference in Washington, D.C., Musk said he's struggled to win support for his tunneling ambitions.

After New York-to-Washington, Musk said he would probably proceed with a hyperloop from Los Angeles to San Francisco and one in Texas.
