Charlie Gard's parents drop request to bring terminally-ill infant home

Mr Justice Francis said he would make a decision about where the 11-month-old boy should spend the remainder of his life today.

In a tearful statement after the announcement of their decision to drop their court case, Charlie's parents said, "this is one of the hardest things we will ever have to say and we are about to do the hardest thing that we will ever have to do, and that is to let our lovely little Charlie go". And after a lengthy legal battle, they made the decision to end their fight.

Many have accused the court of intentionally "running out the clock" on Charlie and his family, in what commentator Jonah Goldberg described as a sadly flawless example of the legal principle "justice delayed is justice denied".

"What have they spent?" The hospital also referred to the work Dr. Michio Hirano, the specialist in Charlie's disorder and professor of neurology at the Columbia University Medical Center in NY, who was brought in to evaluate the child for possible experimental treatment. He has remained at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London ever since.

On Wednesday, Connie Yates appeared in London's High Court after arguing for the right to bring Charlie home on Tuesday.

"It is greatly hoped that in the days ahead, it will be possible to extend to his parents the same quality of care with which Charlie has been provided and to concentrate on the family as a whole" the hospital said in a statement.

But doctors caring for Charlie at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London say it is not practical to provide life-support treatment to Charlie at the couple's home for days.

The hospital says in a statement that it's not in a position to know what might have happened six months ago and that it can not know if Charlie would have responded to the experimental therapy.

They said practicalities were of the "greatest importance" but that Charlie's parents had proposed no clear plan.

Grant Armstrong, the lawyer representing Charlie's parents, told the court that the hospital was placing "obstacle after obstacle" in the way of the parents' final wish.

24 July: Charlie's parents end their legal fight to take him to the United States for treatment. It has suggested that he should be removed from life support within hours of being transferred to a hospice.

About a month ago, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the hospital can remove Charlie's life support and allow him to die.

"We are now going to spend our last precious moments with our son Charlie, who unfortunately won't make his first birthday in just under two weeks", he said. Now we will never know what would have happened if he got treatment. The love that Gard and Yates have demonstrated during Charlie's short life will ensure that his legacy will live on in the years to come.

He also asked, "So as Charlie is allowed to die, what lessons can he teach for future Charlies and their families?" "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Chris and Connie, and we hope that their privacy is respected at this devastating time for their family".
