Charlie Gard's Mom Says Trump, Pope Attention 'Saved' Him

London hospital reviews ending baby's life support

The parents of terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard have vowed "if he's still fighting, we're still fighting" as they delivered a 35,000 signature petition to Great Ormond Street Hospital calling for him to be allowed to travel overseas for treatment.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard spoke as they handed a petition to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, calling for Charlie to be allowed to fly to the USA for potentially life-saving treatment.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital has argued that the treatment overseas sought by Charlie's parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, would not help. Even the most advanced known experimental treatment has little chance of improving his quality of life.

She said no further imaging of Charlie's brain had been carried out since the April ruling. This past March doctors told his parents that there was nothing more they could do.

Meanwhile, Conservative Woman writer Caroline Farrow said the claims of Charlie's parents are "not fundamentally outrageous or unreasonable".

On Sunday, Gates and Yates delivered a petition signed by over 350,000 Charlie Gard supporters to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

They say the U.S. clinician offering the experimental treatment agrees it will not reverse this brain damage.

Previous attempts by Charlie's parents failed as the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court ruled in favour of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) doctors, while the European Court of Human Rights said it would not intervene in the case.

The U.K. High Court agreed to give Gard's case a new trial in light of new evidence concerning nucleoside bypass therapy presented by two global hospitals.

The British hospital treating a terminally ill baby boy said on July 7, 2017 it would examine claims that he could be treated after US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis drew worldwide attention to the case. "If there is new evidence I will hear it".

Charlie inherited the faulty RRM2B gene from his parents, affecting the cells responsible for energy production and respiration and leaving him unable to move or breathe without a ventilator.

However, the treatment has never been used on either mice or humans with the type of mitochondrial disease from which Charlie suffers, according to court documents. The hospital at the Vatican has also offered to take Charlie in for treatment.

Mr Justice Francis oversaw the preliminary hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in the presence of Charlie's parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates. "If he's still fighting, we're still fighting", Mr. Gard said. "They have advocated for him fiercely", Brad Wenstrup, Representative for OH, and Trent Franks, Representative for Arizona, said in a statement last week. "I think that was in part why so many doctors and hospitals began to step forward and say, in fact, this is something we are aware of and there are other [medical] options".

When asked what they will do if the court rules in their favor Yates said they would "get on an air-ambulance and go to the hospital that want to try and save his life".
