Channels activated to trace 39 Indians in Iraq: minister

39 Indians missing in Iraq Congress attacks Centre questions MEA's 'priorities&apos

Based on the search done by Singh she said that the Indians may have been lodged in a jail located in northwest Mosul.

Swaraj said during her interaction with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari here on Monday, she sought an update on the missing Indians backed up by evidence.

External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj has once again won hearts with her heartwarming tweet to Indian daughters and daughters-in-law from other countries. ANI reported, quoting Sushma Swaraj, "Iraq has never said that the 39 Indians missing are dead".

Forty Indians, a lot of them from Punjab, went missing in June 2014 after Mosul fell to the Islamic State.

Swaraj was due to give a statement on behalf of the government on the status of the missing Indians and to respond to Congress privilege notice against Sushma Swaraj. "I thought we should at least search for them", she said.

Family members of 39 Indians who were abducted in Mosul three years ago said that they have lost trust in the government following its constant reneging on statements in regard to retrieving the 39 Indians from the war-torn city in Iraq which was recently freed from the clutches of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). She added that she would not declare anyone dead without proof of the same. "In every meeting, we have been asking why Harjit Masih would tell a lie and Sushma would say "forget about what Harjit says".

The Indian Embassy and the external affairs ministry have been using various diplomatic channels to establish contact with the abductors as well as the abductees.

"Why should I believe Harjit Masih's claims that the 39 Indians are dead?"

Iraq has announced it's offering financial rewards for information regarding the whereabouts of dozens of Indian citizens believed to have been kidnapped by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in 2014. "He told me that in Iraq it is said that wait is worse than death", Swaraj said.

Referring to demolition of the Badush jail, she said she had suggested to the Iraqi foreign minister to look for the jail warden and find out from him details about the Indians.

But when the offensive between Iraqi forces and Islamic State reached its peak last month, the Badush prison was completely destroyed. "Right now, allow her to speak", said Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
