Celtics Trade Bradley to Pistons for Marcus Morris

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

The deal creates the salary-cap space the Celtics needed to sign All-Star free agent forward Gordon Hayward to a four-year, $128 million maximum contract, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Bradley became expendable in Boston because of the depth the Celtics have created with a trove of recent first-round draft picks but mostly due to their need to shed salary to fit newly signed free agent Gordon Hayward under the salary cap. Bradley's arrival gives the Pistons a replacement for Caldwell-Pope, who had been a restricted free agent.

For Detroit, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope became expendable, with Luke Kennard, combo guard Langston Galloway and Bradley joining the team over the past few weeks.

Bradley, who is set to make just over $8.8 million next season, is heading to Detroit.

He averaged 24 points per game in his career at Hendricken, and put up 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals as a senior to help lead the Hawks to a flawless 21-0 record.

Morris, 27, posted 14 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game previous year for the Pistons.

The Boston Celtics pulled off a shocking move early on July 7. Seeing as Bradley, the best player of the bunch, will likely command too much for the Nuggets, though, Smart and Crowder seem like the more realistic targets.

If you think about the Bradley trade as a piece of the summation of the offseason, the Celtics come out as winners. "He will be a great fit for our team", Boston general manager Danny Ainge said Friday. They would select Jayson Tatum with the third pick in the draft after trading down in a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Boston, meanwhile, will look different from the team that was the top seed in the East in 2017 before being routed in the conference finals by Cleveland. Who will start between Hayward and Isaiah Thomas? However, the Celtics are reportedly still gauging the trade market on Crowder, so there could still be moves to be made.

For the Pistons, though, the peril of potentially going into the luxury tax for to retain Caldwell-Pope and not drastically alter a team that finished 37-45 last season was not a good gamble. Over the last four years, per Synergy, Morris shot 39.9 percent on spot-up 3-pointers in the half court (599 attempts), and Bradley shot 38.9 percent (574 attempts).

Bradley will also be pairing up in the backcourt for Detroit with Reggie Jackson.
