Boy Scouts official apologizes for 'political rhetoric' of Trump speech

Members of Troop 2690 give the Scout sign and salute

"We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program", Surbaugh wrote.

One young scout said at least President Trump came to the event.

During a rambling 38-minute speech in Glen Jean, W.V., Trump criticized Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama and singled out Congressional Republicans who were not in lock step with him on health care.

Daluga also said that in his speech Trump predicted that the national media would focus on any negatives.

As CNN reports, Trump appeared aware that he was talking a bit out of turn even as he gave his Boy Scout speech, rhetorically questioning who would want to "talk politics" in front of a bunch of young scouts. "The invitation for the sitting US president to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition and is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies".

But, he said, "we know the past few days have been overshadowed by the remarks offered by the President of the United States".

Throughout the speech, President Trump brought up the subjects of fake news, Obamacare, his cabinet's loyalty, the election results and not being able to say "Merry Christmas" because of political correctness in society.

In Ohio, there's a new scout troop that challenges some assumptions about the Boy Scouts. "For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters".

On Thursday, the Boy Scouts released an official apology, saying that "politics were inserted" into the jamboree.

On Thursday, Michael Surbaugh, Chief Scout Executive of the #Boy Scouts of America, issued an apology to the scouting community in response to #President Trump's controversial speech at the 2017 National Scout #Jamboree in Beaver, West Virginia.

At the White House, however, Sanders indicated that neither she nor Trump saw any reason to apologize, or considered his remarks in any way out of line. She said from her firsthand view the Jamboree was "one of the most energetic crowds" she has seen for Trump.
