Trump compliments Irish reporter on her 'nice smile'

Newly elected Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is scheduled to speak with US president Donald Trump today

Donald Trump interrupted a phone call with the new Irish prime minister to compliment a female journalist's smile.

As the USA president and Irish premier discussed issues such as migration and Britain's exit from the European Union, Trump broke off to compliment RTE's Washington reporter Caitriona Perry's "nice smile".

He was on the phone to the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar when he beckoned RTA's Washington Bureau Chief Caitriona Perry. "I bet she treats you well". For every "yo, you got a nice smile, baby", shouted by a man on the sidewalk, there's a woman clutching her keys a little bit tighter just in case she needs to fight off an attack.

Social media users blasted Trump's comments - describing him as "creepy" and the fact he singled her out as "disgusting".

"We have a lot of your Irish press watching us", the president explains to Mr Varadkar, "We have all of this attractive Irish press".

Trump then pointed to Perry, called her over to his desk and asked where she was from.

During the call, Trump said: "We have so many people from Ireland in this country".
