Jury deadlocked in Bill Cosby sexual assault trial

Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial Wednesday

Before the impasse, the sequestered jury of seven men and five women had paused deliberations six times to revisit testimony or ask for clarity on the phrasing of one of the charges.

After jurors in the Bill Cosby trial had deliberated for about 31 hours, they told the judge they were deadlocked.

A hung jury would represent a clear victory for Cosby, who would avoid what could have been years in prison for three counts of aggravated indecent assault.

Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial, Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in Norristown, Pa.

Constand and other accusers say Cosby - the star of the 1980s hit TV comedy The Cosby Show - often plied them with pills and alcohol before assaulting them in a series of incidents over four decades.

The 79-year-old Cosby has been charged with drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former Temple University official, in 2004.

As jurors in the sexual assault criminal trial of entertainer Bill Cosby said they were deadlocked only to be instructed to try again by the judge Thursday morning, fans (and the media) wait.

Judge Steven O'Neill said Friday that defense lawyers have made at least four bids for a mistrial as the deliberations have worn on without a verdict.

Each jury deadlock announcement is met with a defense motion for a mistrial.

As the jurors quit for the night Wednesday, O'Neill praised their diligence as they weigh charges that could put Cosby in prison for the rest of his life.

The jurors, who have deliberated for more than 40 hours, asked O'Neill on Friday to reread portions of the sworn depositions Cosby gave during Constand's civil lawsuit in 2005 and 2006, when he described the night in question. "That takes time. They are looking at the facts and evidence regarding 'consent.' and they were reviewing the deposition section regarding the manner in which the defendant Cosby used drugs to deal with women".

A 2005 police interview during which Cosby acknowledged giving her pills and fondling her, along with related testimony from the suburban Philadelphia detective who read it into the record. Constand said on the witness stand she did not know Jackson. One other accuser, Kelly Johnson, testified during the trial as prosecutors sought to establish that Cosby had a pattern of assault.

Early yesterday, the jury in the Norristown, Pennsylvania courtroom informed the court that they were unable to reach a unanimous agreement on any of the three charges the comedian faces. Some of them looked defeated as the judge sent them back to the jury room. Keshia Knight Pulliam, who played Rudy Huxtable on "The Cosby Show", escorted Cosby into court on the first day of the trial.

The case stems from accusations from Andrea Constand who's case was the only one filed before the statue of limitations had expired.

But so far, the jury said it hasn't unanimously decided whether he's guilty.

Furthermore, according to our source - a number of jurors told the judge that they wanted to make a trip to Target for toiletries as they'll be here for a while.
