Gregg Allman's funeral planned in Macon, where band won fame

Gregg Allman, Star of Southern Rock, Dies at Age 69

Leavell says he was honored to be part of the tribute concert to Gregg in Atlanta a few years ago, and the number of stars that showed up to take part speaks volumes about Allman's influence on southern rock and the music industry.

Gregory LeNoir Allman, one of two brothers who founded their namesake group, The Allman Brothers Band, died Saturday at age 69.

According to Macon's Telegraph newspaper, a reporter from which spoke to Allman's manager, Michael Lehman, Allman's memorial service will take place at Snow's Memorial Chapel at 1PM. After years of musical anonymity, a self-titled debut album in 1969 put the Allman Brothers on the radar, and their blockbuster 1971 recording of live performances from the Fillmore East in NY remains a rock landmark. "Like I said, it was different", said Causey.

LIGHT: You know, he was always so careful, and it was such a priority to him to say that the vision for the music of The Allman Brothers came from his brother, that Duane had an idea for this band. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Chuck Leavell, former member of the Allman Brothers Band, says though he is sad about his friend and former band mate's passing, Gregg Allman's spirit and music will live on. He lived a lot of life when he was still a young man - most of that before I ever met him.

Across the twilight, the first clear notes of "Hot 'Lanta" rise from Gregg Allman's Hammond B3 keyboard.

Allman battled substance abuse for years, and he struggled with various heath issues over the last years of his life, including Hepatitis C, a liver transplant and lung surgery.

Allman's legacy in Buffalo does involve stints at a local rehab, as well as the Allman Brothers Band's ill-fated 1970 appearance at Aliotta's Lounge, which concluded with band manager Twiggs Lyndon stabbing and killing owner Angelo Aliotta during a dispute over payment. Before his final trip to Charleston last year, Allman told Vincent Harris that after more than 40 years on the road and in the studio, he stays positive: "I'm really busy and really happy".

Allman was married six times in his life, most memorably to Cher, from 1975 to 1979. "He kept it very private because he wanted to continue to play music until he couldn't".

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND: (Singing) Just one more morning I had to wake up with the blues. Allman was known for his loyalty to his players and Burnett's recording suggestion was almost a deal breaker.

Lehman said Allman died at about 2:30 p.m. ET, surrounded by his family and Middleton.

Allman's family will release an official statement in coming days.
