WR Josh Gordon's reinstatement denied by NFL

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon walks off

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon's application for reinstatement has been denied by the National Football League, but the 2013 Pro Bowl receiver is permitted to reapply for reinstatement this fall, according to USA Today Sports' Tom Pelissero.

A league source confirmed to The Chronicle-Telegram that Gordon's petition for reinstatement from an indefinite drug suspension was denied. He applied in early March and is eligible to reapply in the fall.

Gordon was poised to rejoin the Browns last season after being conditionally reinstated and having to serve a four-game suspension.

The Browns still control the rights to Gordon, who caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013.

Even if Gordon was reinstated, there is no guarantee that he would wear the number 12 for the Browns ever again.

The NFL did not immediately announce why it declined Gordon's application for reinstatement. He has played in only five regular-season games, all in 2014, since then. "This will be a special year for Josh and we are all very proud of the way he has taken the necessary steps to turn his life around". If this is a case where he needs to be saved from himself. He has been kicked off two teams in college for substance abuse problems, failing drug tests. The Browns selected him in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft. The 30-year-old linebacker last played in a game in December 2013.
