Taking abortion pill at home as safe as in a clinic

Northern Ireland and Ireland have some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world

In Ireland and Northern Ireland, where abortion is a criminal offense in most cases, women are increasingly turning to organizations such as Women on Web, a nonprofit that provides abortion-inducing medicines and remote real-time instruction on their use, said Abigail Aiken, an assistant professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the lead author of a report on research into abortions via telemedicine. Overall, almost 95 percent of women studied reported successful results with the medication, and few reported adverse side effects such as the need for antibiotics, surgical intervention or blood transfusions. Seventy-eight percent of the women were 7 weeks pregnant and 22% were 7-9 weeks pregnant when they accessed WoW.

Researchers at the University of Texas in Austin, with Rebecca Gomperts, founder of global collective Women on Web (WoW), analysed data provided by women who had bought medical abortion pills through the WoW website between January 2010 and December 31st, 2012.

As Ireland and Norther Ireland have some of the strictest laws regarding this issue, and women are allowed to abort only if their life is at risk.

The results - published Tuesday in the journal The BMJ - show that 95 percent of the group's abortions were successful, and less than three percent of women required antibiotics afterward.

A study into women who seek abortion pills online in the face of strict laws against terminations has found that nearly 95% safely ended their pregnancy without surgical intervention.

Of course, researchers and health care providers who work in reproductive health care must walk a fine line, being careful not to encourage women to induce their own abortions, while simultaneously finding ways to help those who have already chose to do so.

The survey concludes that the results support growing calls in some countries for reform of restrictive abortion laws.

"What this study adds is an important exploration of whether women in jurisdictions with severe restrictions on abortion, but good access to high-quality health care, will self-assess and manage potential complications", they wrote.

Abortion via telemedicine is banned in Texas.

Women on Web is linked to Women on Waves, an abortion boat that sails around performing abortion on worldwide waters.

Fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest are not circumstances in which abortions can be legally performed.

She believes that the study is "putting the lives and health of pregnant women in Ireland at risk by promoting self-use of abortion pills".

In Ireland, women who do medical abortion at their own are facing 14-year jail sentence.

'Our politicians are happy to outsource their responsibility to other countries and organisations that provide the abortion pill illegally'.

RG: Do these results from Ireland and Northern Ireland have implications for the USA and other countries?

The 1967 Abortion Act, which legalised the practice in Britain, never applied to the province, where abortion is only legal if a woman's life is at risk, or there is a permanent or serious risk to her mental or physical health. Women in these countries often resort to unsafe methods (including sharp objects or noxious substances) to end their pregnancies. The rates of adverse events were low and women were able to identify any symptoms of complications.

In the United States, abortion is supposed to be a legally-protected right for all women.
