Russian government releases photos of Oval Office meeting

Russia's Lavrov to meet with Trump on Syria amid uproar

This was despite the fact the White House meant to not allow photographers from media companies into the Oval Office for that meeting.

But it comes only one day after the president stunned Washington by firing James Comey as director of the FBI amid an investigation into whether Mr Trump's campaign aides colluded with Russian Federation to sway the November elections.

Comey's dismissal escalated concerns in both parties that Trump may be trying to undermine an investigation that appears to be gaining steam. It said that Russian Federation developed a clear preference for Trump. Also attending was Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the USA who is at the center of numerous Trump administration's early Russia-related woes. He and Lavrov said they discussed the civil war in Syria, where Russian Federation backs President Bashar al-Assad.

"What we want to do is to see that as murder, frightful murder in Syria will be stopped as soon as possible, and each side works on it", he added. "The Trump administration, and the president himself, and the secretary of state, I was persuaded of this once again today, are people of action".

The US Secretary of State said that the two would be continuing "our dialogue and our exchange of views which began in Moscow with the dialogue he hosted on a very broad range of topics".

Russian Federation denies the allegations.

"We believe the U.S.is really interested in that", Lavrov said, acknowledged details of the plan still needed to be worked out.

The administration has backed North Atlantic Treaty Organisation efforts to counter Russia's military buildup and aggressive actions in Europe, from the Baltics to Ukraine and Georgia. "You're kidding", Mr Lavrov told reporters sarcastically before waving his hand dismissively and leaving the room.

When a reporter asked whether the dismissal has "cast a shadow" over their talks, Lavrov stopped and seemed to look genuinely quizzical when he responded, "Was he fired?" - but he then adopted a deadpan tone as he told the reporter, "You are kidding, you are kidding". "He was sacked? You're kidding, you're kidding", Mr Lavrov said.

Still, Tillerson's meeting provided a blueprint for how the former Cold War foes might go about improving ties. He says through a translator that "there is not a single fact" or piece of compelling evidence proving Russia's intervention in the election.

Washington has long said Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad can't remain in power if the war-torn nation is to move forward. Trump recently described relations as being at an "all-time low".

During that trip, Mr Tillerson said relations with Russian Federation were at a low and needed to be rebuilt.

Trump and Lavrov said they discussed the need to work together to end the conflict in Syria and Trump stressed the administration's commitment to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. "Therefore, Mr. Shannon and I have done some work to ease somehow the bilateral agenda for the ministers so that they can spare time for Syria and other worldwide issues", he said.

Russian Federation brokered a deal for de-escalation zones with backing from Iran and Syrian opposition supporter Turkey during ceasefire talks in the Kazakh capital Astana last week.
