Netanyahu Tells Tillerson Moving US Embassy to Jerusalem Would 'Right Historic Wrong'

Many observers believe that beyond Trump's pre-occupation with being the guy that closes the "ultimate deal", delivering the Israeli-Palestinian peace pact that no one believed is possible will cement the U.S. role in the Middle East for a long time to come.

"The President, I think rightly, has taken a very deliberative approach to understanding the issue itself, listening to input from all interested parties in the region, and understanding what such a move in the context of a peace initiative what impact would such a move have".

"We welcome this new development and we are optimistic about the upcoming visit of the United States president to Palestine, where he is expected to visit Bethlehem and meet with President Abbas".

During his presidential campaign, Trump controversially promised to move the embassy and to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's "undivided" capital. It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community. But Tillerson linked Trump's deliberations directly to his aspirations for brokering Mideast peace.

Later that day, Netanyahu's office released a statement calling the Jordanian reaction "outrageous", and said Amman appeared to be backing terrorism.

He will meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders as part of his first foreign trip later this week. After stopping in Saudi Arabia, Trump will visit both Israel and the Palestinian territories, in a nod to his nascent bid to strike the Israeli-Palestinian deal that has eluded his predecessors. Moving the embassy, the statement said, "would advance it (the peace process) by correcting a historic injustice and by shattering the Palestinian fantasy according to which Jerusalem isn't the capital of Israel". It listed reasons why Jerusalem has not been accepted de jure as Israel's capital: the first harks back to 1947 and the United Nations Partition Plan that delineated Jerusalem as a corpus separatum under worldwide supervision.

There have been some signs that the Israeli government, while publicly supporting moving the embassy, has quietly raised concerns that doing so could enflame the political and security situation.
