Israel reportedly strikes arms depot near Syrian capital

RONEN ZVULUN

Arab media reports point the finger at the Israeli air force, but the IDF has not issued a statement.

The source said the arms depot gets a major part of the weapons supplied to an array of Iranian backed militias, led by Hezbollah, which have thousands of fighters engaged in some of the toughest fronts against Syrian rebels.

Israel does not usually comment on action it takes in Syria.

Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz on Thursday appeared to confirm reports that Israel was behind an overnight airstrike near the Damascus airport.

"Every time we receive intelligence information on plans to transfer advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, we will act", the minister added.

Syrian state news agency Sana said several missiles had been fired at a military site south-west of the airport, causing explosions that resulted in some material losses.

The airport lies about 25 kilometres (15 miles) southeast of the city centre.

Also, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 19 civilians, including nine children, were killed around the northern province.

The Israeli military said it deployed its Patriot missile defence system to tackle the projectile incoming from Syria above the Golan Heights.

It is not the first time Israel has been shelling Syrian regime's backed forces, notably Shiite Hezbollah in the name of sabotaging Iran's efforts from arming the group.

A Syrian official said Syria would "continue to destroy the enemy's collaborators." .

Israel said the explosion was "consistent" with its policy to prevent Iran smuggling weapons to Hezbollah but stopped short of claiming responsibility for the bombing.

As well as weapons, hundreds of Shi'ite militia fighters from Iraq and Iran have been flown to Damascus global airport.

Israel and Syria are still technically at war, though the armistice line had remained largely quiet for decades until 2011 when the Syrian conflict began. The last one was in January targeting the Mezze military base. As per the media of Israel, they were storing weapons for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. It has also carried out a number of airstrikes on suspected weapon convoys it believed were destined for Hezbollah.
