How will early signing period change football recruiting?

The Collegiate Commissioners Association approved a proposal for an early signing period in college football, and this is something that figures to alter the shape of recruiting substantially.

The Dec. 20-22 dates coincide with the first three days for junior college players to sign letters of intent to transfer to four-year colleges.

The original objective of the early signing period was to give recruits a chance to end the recruiting process early, which for some began in middle school. Recruits who do not take advantage of the early-signing window will stick with the current February signing period, and submit NLI's the first Wednesday in February on National Signing Day.

Division II schools will decide in June whether to adopt the December signing period. "Will you have all your early commitments signed?" The phone calls from coaches will stop late in the process.

Ever since he set foot in Tucson, Arizona Wildcats head coach Rich Rodriguez has wondered aloud why there's no early signing period in college football. Under the old rules, official visits were conducted after a prospect's senior season.

"An early signing period can help with stress if you already know what school you want to go to", said Houston Lamar cornerback D'Shawn Jamison. Stoops said then. "They ought to have an early day as well.

So that's a good thing, I think".

It would also signal an official end to a player's recruitment who has always been committed but has other schools hoping to flip him.

Last season, eventual five-star linebacker Jacob Phillips committed to Oklahoma in October but was courted hard by LSU in the weeks before February's signing day and eventually flipped to the Tigers.
