Google's New Project Treble Has Finally Fixed Android's Biggest Trouble, Slow Updates

The Verge

Only updating the Android framework would enable them to push new version update.

Here's the unbelievable part: Treble will allow the Samsungs, LGs and Huaweis of the world to push out updates without having to rely on the Qualcomms and Broadcoms to make large changes to the underlying core Android framework.

Google's new Project Treble is aimed to reduce the time gap between a new Android release and when it lands on your phone. In a nutshell, it aims to significantly lessen the burden on third-party phone manufacturers so they can deliver updates in a timely fashion.

This changes that, or so Google says, with Treble being its "biggest change yet to low-level system architecture". But now, they will be able to update the Android version without writing new codes.

In other words, by adding this additional layer of code outside of the core Android OS, less of the software on any given device will need to be updated.

The new "Vendor Interface" separates the Android framework from the hardware. This is brought on by the fact that every smartphone manufacturer installs its own modified version of Android on its devices. There are no major apps that require a new Android OS version that no one has.

Device makers and carriers make the new release available to users.

It's not the first time Google's tried to address complaints about Android's fragmented nature.

Google is looking at a modular architecture, which will divide vendor implementation or device-specific lower-level software written by silicon manufacturers from the Android OS Framework.

Project Treble lets device manufacturers focus only on the parts of Android that affect their phones.

VTS is exactly like Compatibility Test Suit (CTS) that used to help the developers to develop new apps compatible with the Android OS and the hardware of their devices.

This isn't something that will be user-facing, meaning Project Treble isn't going to have any shiny new features or tools to play with as an end user.

In addition to the architectural changes, Google is working with its partners to move their code changes into the common Android Open Source Project codebase.
