CNN exclusive: Grand jury subpoenas issued in FBI's Russia investigation

Sally Yates to Senate Committee Mike Flynn Was ‘Compromised’ AP

"I know we were really concerned about the compromise here and that's why we were encouraging them to act", Yates told the Senate Judicial Committee's Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism in response.

An Obama administration official who warned the Trump White House about contacts between one of its key advisers and Russian Federation is set to speak publicly for the first time about the concerns she raised.

The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena on Wednesday demanding documents related to Russian Federation from President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn, ramping up its monthslong investigation of Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. Just because someone comes in and gives you a heads" up about something and says, "I want to share some information' doesn't mean you immediately jump the gun and go take an action.

Ms. Yates was involved in the controversy concerning Gen. Michael Flynn, allegedly warning the Trump White House in early January about General Flynn's contacts with the Russian ambassador, Sergei Kislyak. And she would have been - at a minimum - risking her career by either misleading or hyping up the idea that one of Trump's closest allies was in danger of being blackmailed by the Russians.

Obama aides also described Flynn as notably dismissive of the threat Russian Federation posed to the United States when discussing policy in transition meetings with outgoing national security adviser Susan Rice and other top officials.

Flynn had been interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation shortly beforehand, at the White House and without counsel present, she recalled. He has dismissed FBI and congressional investigations into his campaign's possible ties to the election meddling as a "hoax" driven by Democrats bitter over losing the White House. Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chairman of the panel, said.

"Given its sensitivity, even the existence of a counter-intelligence investigation is closely held, including at the highest levels", Clapper said.

Flynn was forced to resign as Trump's national security adviser just weeks after Trump took office after he failed to disclose the nature of phone discussions with Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the USA, during the Trump transition.

Flynn was sacked by Trump in February after published reports that the national security adviser had misled Vice President Pence about his discussions with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

In Tuesday's press briefing, Spicer insisted that Yates was no friend to Trump because she had been rumored to be part of a potential Hillary Clinton administration if the former secretary of state won.

It was more than a week after Yates raised concerns about Flynn with McGahn that the story leaked to the Washington Post, prompting a series of events that led to Flynn's ouster from his White House job.
