Australia may ban laptops on worldwide flights: Malcolm Turnbull

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows President Donald Trump meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington Wednesday

Australia would "work very closely with our partners around the world" in constantly reviewing aviation security, he said.

"In due course any announcements will be made formally through the transport minister".

United States officials previously said that the ban on large electronic devices, in force since March, was based on intelligence information indicating that terrorist groups have designed bombs that can be concealed in electronic devices and could circumvent security measures at airports.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has this week indicated Australia may now follow in the footsteps of the two nations by imposing similar bans.

Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister, said his government was looking "very closely" at introducing a ban on the devices, as President Trump did in March for direct flights from eight Muslim-majority countries.

The UK and U.S. have already banned large electronic devices in cabins on flights arriving from certain Middle East and African countries.

Australia is considering following the lead of the USA and United Kingdom in banning laptops from cabin baggage on some inbound worldwide flights.

"If there is no specific threat or risk, then they've got to carefully examine it - the measure just going to cost hundreds of millions of dollars and not have any fundamental additional impact on security?" He said the logistic of doing launching measures at screening points would be significant.

The British security rules apply to flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Qantas, Australia's largest airline, assures the company is also closely monitoring the issue and has regular communications with the government as well as regulators.
