US test launches unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile

Air Force to test nuclear missile Wednesday: report

Then you probably saw a test launch of a Minuteman III missile.

The missile was launched by US Air Force from Vandenberg Air Force Base on Wednesday morning.

The US Air Force test-fired an unarmed long-range missile capable of carrying a nuclear weapon, Wednesday, according to the Air Force Global Strike Command.

It's expected to be cloudy during the overnight hours, but some Northern Californians may see test launch. However, a spokeswoman for the Air Force Global Strike Command says the test was planned in advance and is not connected with the situation in North Korea, and the launches happen on regular basis, according to the Washington Examiner. Fox31 Denver quoted the officials of US Air Force saying the missile travelled approximately 4,200 miles to test range.

The 30th Space Wing commander, Col. John Moss, said Minuteman launches are essential to verify the status of the USA nuclear force and to demonstrate the national nuclear capabilities.

The Air Force officer in charge of the test called the launch, "an important demonstration of our nation's nuclear deterrent capability".

"Test launches like this one are vital to validating the effectiveness and readiness of our operational nuclear systems, so it is critical that they are successful". Still, the test's timing was criticized Monday by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a California-based nonprofit opposed to the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

First deployed in the 1960s as part of the USA nuclear deterrent program, the Minuteman system is supposed to ensure that missiles can be launched quickly and at any time.

The Vandenberg test would be the second missile launched from the base this year. Pyongyang conducted a missile test of its own on April 16, and some experts have speculated that the nation is gearing up to perform its sixth nuclear-weapons test soon as well. It's unclear if President Donald Trump will attend.
