Taser Incident Causes Crowd to Panic at Penn Station, Reports Say

People returned to collect their bags within the hour of the stampede in Penn Station

About 1,200 passengers were stranded on a New Jersey Transit train at New York Penn Station Friday afternoon, another in a series of recent technical problems that have disrupted the lives of thousands of commuters. Without power for air conditioning, the temperature had steadily risen and passengers got antsy, he said.

Police said the Macy's was briefly put on lockdown, and the active shooter reports were unfounded.

The panic began when Amtrak Police tasered two men in an attempt to detain them for disobeying orders, WABC reported.

When Amtrak police subdued a man with a stungun, travelers feared a shooting had taken place, causing pandemonium as they scrambled for safety.

A New Jersey Transit spokeswoman says the train finally reached Penn Station just before 6 p.m.

NYPD said it had responded to "numerous" calls of shots fired in and around Macy's.

The crowd was larger than usual because a train had just arrived from Trenton, New Jersey with 1,200 passengers after being stalled in a Hudson River tunnel for almost three hours.

NJ Transit commuters expressed outrage and fury over the delays on social media.

Delays were at their worst in peak periods, as 123 LIRR trains were canceled in the morning and evening rush hours in the week ended April 7.

Brian Scheckner, who claimed to be on the disabled train, said he and fellow passengers were stuck for almost three hours. In the meantime, trains traveling through the north tube will be down to a single track.

Sanati said she and her husband were headed for the New York International Auto Show when they boarded the train in Secaucus, New Jersey, at Secaucus Junction, the last New York-bound stop before Penn Station. The trains were delayed 90 minutes just before the Easter weekend.
