Samsung's Galaxy S8 gives it a shot at reputation rehabilitation

Samsung Galaxy S8 owners complain their screens are affected by red tint

According to a new report from South Korea, the Samsung Galaxy S8 pre-orders have crossed the 1 million units mark. That's all right, though: This is a phone that balances a careful polish with a few features that still push the envelope. Not everything works quite the way you might hope, but the biggest, most obvious idea works exactly as it should. You'll still find Samsung's added "Edge" functionality, which lets you swipe the right of the display to access your most-used apps or favourite contacts, but we switched this feature off, as given the compact size of the handset makes it quick enough to access apps without needing additional shortcuts. Of course, it's impossible for me to assure anyone that this phone won't have the same problem as the Galaxy Note 7.

Not that unlocking your phone is hard because.

This barely-there bezel means there's no longer room for a fingerprint sensor on the front of the S8, and the clicky home button has been binned in favour of a "virtual" button, which arrives in the form of a pressure sensor hidden under the OLED display.

The feature doesn't always work that well, however. Also, Iris scanner is the new feature and everyone wants to try it.

To access, you'll need to go Settings Lock screen and security Iris Scanner Preview screen mask. You can also opt to attach images automatically captured by both the phone's front and rear cameras, or a 5-second audio recording. It has been upgraded from 5-megapixel on the S7 to 8-megapixel but it's the smart autofocus that we really like. Placing it next to the camera sensor is just begging for a smudged lens, and Samsung has even built a feature into the software to combat that. The camera will then combine them into one sharp, detailed photo. Our review will be coming later this week (we want just a little bit more time before our verdict), but in the time I've spent using the phone so far, there's one thing I've found that irks me to no end: the fingerprint scanner...

Except ... Bixby isn't launching in all its glory along with the phone.

Don't worry, the earphone jack is still present on the Samsung S8+. You'll get two adapters in the box: one to connect the Galaxy S8 to any MicroUSB cables you already have, and the other to connect the Galaxy S8 to a standard USB-A cable.

That's not all - there's also the Bixby camera, which uses artificial intelligence to recognise images (point it at a landmark and it'll tell you what it is, point it at a can of coke and it'll send you to Amazon to buy one), as well as transcribe or translate text. What's more, the new phones aren't too far removed from last year's Galaxy S7, calling the S8 "a safe evolution on the S7 Edge - proportions".

In terms of battery life, the S8+ comes with a 3,500mAh battery which is a tad smaller than the predecessor's but it didn't have any problem lasting an entire day even with heavy use. I wouldn't get my eyes lasered for any old phone, but for the S8, a device that is bound to redefine the way we think about phones for the next year or two, well I just might pop a couple of Valiums and scorch my eyeballs.

All in all, it's an Android that takes everything up a notch.
