Protesters across US press Trump to release tax returns

Americans' Perceptions of Income Taxes as Fair Highest Since 2009

Thousands of protesters in over 150 US cities are mobilizing on Saturday for the Tax March, a nationwide demonstration calling on President Donald Trump disclose his tax returns.

Progress NC Action has collected nearly 6,000 petition signatures supporting the Trump Act, which would require Presidential candidates to release five years of tax returns in order to appear on the ballot in North Carolina.

"There are probably many illegal or questionable investments in things that could affect how he looks at government and legislation, because he's too connected", Lodwick said. Although he initially promised to do so, he later claimed he was under audit by the Internal Revenue Service and said his attorneys had advised against it - though experts and IRS officials said such audits don't bar taxpayers from releasing their returns. Thirty-foot inflatable chickens will also go up at the marches in New York City and San Francisco, according to Kevin Donohoe, a Tax March organizer.

"Thanks to Trump, I think that releasing your taxes when you run for president now has to be a law", said New Yorker Marni Halasa, 51, who arrived in a tutu and leggings made of fake dollar bills and holding a sign that read "Show Me The Money!"

Protesters say Americans deserve to know about Trump's potential conflicts of interest.

She says there's nothing to prevent Trump from releasing his income taxes and that "the simple truth is he's got a lot to hide".

Rep. Ted Lieu, Rep. Brad Sherman and county Supervisor Sheila Kuehl are expected to speak at the march about why they feel it's important for Trump to release his returns to the public.

Protesters began converging on Cambridge Common in Massachusetts, where they also plan to call on the all-Democratic Massachusetts Congressional delegation to oppose Trump's budget proposal. "Without seeing his tax returns, we have no idea what he's hiding".

In Washington, D.C., Sen.

"Disclosing tax returns is the very lowest ethical bar for a president, and we are going to insist that he clear it", Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, told the crowd in Washington.

Organizers said they stuck with the traditional tax-deadline date of April 15 for the marches because as a Saturday it would draw more attendance, even though this year's income tax filing deadline was pushed back to Tuesday. It has legal authority to obtain confidential tax records, and could vote to make them public.
