No Voters, Only Armed Personnel in Srinagar/Budgam Repoll

Srinagar LS repoll: NC writes to EC for free & fair polling

Summary: SRINAGAR: Four days after widespread violence left eight people dead in Jammu and Kashmir 's Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha constituency, only 467 votes were cast in four hours of re-polling on Thursday. The re-polling was ordered in 38 voting stations.

Amid violence in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency voting, only two per cent turnout was witnessed in repolling in 38 polling stations, PTI quoted officials as saying.

The district administration has imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPc in the entire Budgam district, except in the areas where polling is taking place.

This is published unedited from the IANS feed.

The voter turnout of 7% on Sunday was the lowest in decades, a result of a boycott called by separatist leaders.

There was an altercation between opposition National Congress and ruling PDP workers at Badran in Beerwah area over allegations of bogus voting, the officials said. Polling staff and security personnel intervened and resolved the issue.

On April 9, when the constituency went for polls across three districts, 118 booths were closed for polling by noon due to protestes.

Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) J&K, Shantmanu said that adequate arrangements of security and videography have been made for re-polling at 38 polling stations. Going by the killing of eight civilians and injuries to more than 170 in the Srinagar Lok Sabha by-election, and the torching of schools in Anantnag which were chosen as polling centres, it is wise that the commission chose to defer the polls.

He said all other arrangements mandated by the EC for ensuring free and fair polls have also been put in place. Among those who had asked for that was Tassaduq Hussain Mufti, the brother of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is her party's candidate from Anantnag. He told a TV channel, "We will examine the (security) situation at that point of time but I don't think this much of deployment will be needed".
