Dave Chappelle salutes Charlie Murphy at John Mayer concert

11:15am

Chappelle then broke the news about Murphy, speaking publicly about it for the first time: "And today, I got some bad news".

Eddie Murphy's older brother, Charlie Murphy, has died at the young age of 57 from leukemia.

"My good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning, and everybody in comedy is heartbroken", Chappelle said, before asking Mayer to play a song for Murphy.

Former basketball great Magic Johnson tweeted: "I haven't seen anything as amusing as Charlie Murphy & Dave Chappelle's skits on the Chappelle's Show!". Murphy's heartbreaking final tweet, posted Tuesday, reads: "One to Sleep On: Release the past to rest as deeply as possible".

After joking around congenially for a few minutes, Chappelle began talking about Murphy.

He was perhaps best-known for his appearances on "Chappelle's Show" on Comedy Central.

Mayer was playing a gig in OH where Chappelle surprised guests by appearing on stage. "I'm lucky to have know you and I'm even luckier to be able to say that I was a friend".

Tributes to Murphy began pouring in from all corners of social media nearly immediately, many of them from the late actor and standup's colleagues in the entertainment world.

Certainly, Charlie will be missed and his legacy will live on through his work. "He died with gigs on the books". It was part of his years-long tour with fellow comedians Cedric the Entertainer, Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley and George Lopez.

The father-of-three had previously lost his wife Tisha to cervical cancer in 2009.
