Twitter no longer counts names towards 140-character limit in replies

Here's why: Twitter's update no longer counts a user name toward the 140 character Tweet limit, so one could tag dozens of people and still have 140 characters for their tweet.

Twitter has added several updates that will give users a little more room to express themselves: In September the company announced that gifs, images, graphs and other media won't count toward your 140-word total. Who users reply to will appear above the tweet text rather than inside the text. Instead of including the username of the person you're replying to in the tweet itself, the username will appear above your text.

Moreover, you can now easily specify who you exactly you're replying to within a group conversation.

So, tweets like this exchange late Wednesday between myself and my CNET colleague Jason Parker, now won't count into either of our character count. To remove any user - save for the author of the original tweet you're responding to - also click the checkmark, and they will be removed. In August, it bumped the character limit for direct messages from 140 characters to 10,000.

Before, whenever you replied to someone on Twitter, their user names always led the reply.

Twitter is making conversations better - and potentially more confusing. The "replying to" button will allow people to see anyone else attached to the Twitter thread.

With Thursday's change, Twitter is also revamping how it displays reply tweets on its mobile and web platforms.
